The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has unveiled an ambitious proposal to upgrade the city’s streetlighting system. The plan, which received cabinet approval on August 22, involves transitioning to LED streetlights equipped with a centralized control and monitoring system. This move aims to significantly reduce power consumption and enhance energy efficiency across Bengaluru.

The initiative will be rolled out in four phases, covering seven zones of the city. Law Minister H K Patil confirmed that the cabinet has also approved using funds deposited with Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) to finance the LED streetlights. The new LED lights are anticipated to cut annual power usage by up to 50% compared to the old sodium-vapour streetlights.

Currently, BBMP zones like Mahadevapura already feature LED streetlights, with approximately 1.6 lakh out of the total 4.6 lakh streetlights already upgraded. The plan includes replacing around 3 lakh remaining streetlights with LED fixtures, further promoting energy savings and improved street lighting.
