In a groundbreaking move to enhance road safety, Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) has partnered with Rotary Bangalore Midtown (RBM) for a unique campaign aimed at replacing substandard helmets worn by riders. The initiative involves cracking down on poor-quality helmets by breaking them and handing out ISI-marked replacements. The campaign’s schedule will remain a surprise, adding an element of unpredictability.
On the day of the campaign, BTP officers will be stationed at six high-traffic spots across Bengaluru. Riders wearing flimsy helmets will have their headgear broken on-site, and new, safer helmets will be distributed in its place. Additionally, traffic police and RBM members will educate riders on the critical importance of wearing high-quality helmets to prevent severe head injuries in case of accidents.
Palani Loganathan, president of RBM, emphasized that most fatalities in two-wheeler accidents are caused by head injuries. He expressed concern over the widespread use of cheap helmets despite significant investments in vehicles, highlighting the campaign’s role in raising awareness. M.N. Anuchet, Joint Commissioner (Traffic) of Bengaluru, has also lent his support, with the initiative running over three days. Helmets have already been procured by RBM for distribution to riders caught with unsafe helmets.
With the dates and times kept secret, the initiative aims to engage the community and make a lasting impact on road safety.
