Bengaluru: A 45-year-old former software engineer died by suicide at an under-construction building in Nallurahalli on Thursday, with his family alleging sustained harassment, extortion attempts and undue pressure from two individuals who purportedly acted in collusion with officials of the Greater Bengaluru Authority. The deceased, Murali Govindaraju, had been overseeing the construction of his family home when he reportedly faced repeated intimidation that, according to his mother, pushed him towards taking the extreme step. Police have filed a case and are investigating the matter.

Family alleges extortion attempts

According to the complaint filed by Murali’s mother, the former engineer had bought the plot in Nallurahalli in 2018 from a relative and had recently begun constructing a house on it. However, over the last several weeks, two individuals — identified as Usha Nambiyar and Shashi Nambiyar — allegedly began visiting the site frequently and demanded ₹20 lakh from Murali without providing any legal justification.

The complainant stated that the duo had visited their property nearly 10 to 15 times between late October and the day of the incident. When Murali refused to pay the amount, they allegedly threatened him and began exerting psychological pressure. She further claimed that the two individuals used their connections with certain officials of the Greater Bengaluru Authority to create further trouble at the construction site.

Visits to construction site increased pressure

Family members told police that the harassment intensified when municipal officials began accompanying the accused individuals to the under-construction site. These visits, they said, were disruptive and intimidating, causing Murali severe stress as he struggled to understand the basis of the alleged extortion demand.

On the morning of the incident, Murali reportedly faced renewed pressure to pay the demanded amount. Deeply distressed, he left home around 6 am and headed to the building site, telling his wife he needed to check on ongoing work. This was the last time his family saw him.

Body discovered by carpenter

Around 9:30 am, a carpenter identified as Ganesha — who had arrived for his daily work shift — discovered Murali hanging from an iron hook meant for installing a ceiling fan. He immediately alerted the family and local authorities. Police arrived at the scene shortly thereafter and recovered a 10-page suicide note believed to have been written by Murali.

According to preliminary information, the note details the emotional turmoil he experienced over the alleged harassment and the pressure to pay an illegal sum. The contents of the note have been seized for forensic examination and will form a crucial part of the investigation.

Family demands strict action

Murali’s mother has demanded stringent legal action against Usha and Shashi, accusing them of continuous harassment and abetment to suicide. The family has urged the police to identify the civic officials allegedly involved and determine whether abuse of power or illegal coordination played a role in the events leading to Murali’s death.

Neighbours and relatives described Murali as a quiet, dedicated father who lived with his wife, Durgadevi, and their two children, Kanishtha and Deshita. He had earlier worked as a software engineer before switching careers to pursue independent projects and real-estate investments.

Police begin investigation

Police officials stated that a case has been registered based on the family’s complaint. Investigators are now examining CCTV footage in the vicinity, questioning the accused individuals, and checking records of visits made by civic officials to the property.

A senior officer said that the alleged involvement of any government officials will be investigated thoroughly, and no angle will be ruled out at this stage.

A growing concern for residents

The incident has sparked discussions in the area about alleged harassment by civic authorities or individuals claiming influence. Residents of Nallurahalli have expressed concern over what they describe as increasing instances of intimidation during property construction or documentation processes.

Community members are urging authorities to set up a transparent grievance-redressal mechanism to prevent such incidents in the future.

Conclusion

Murali Govindaraju’s death has raised serious questions about civic accountability, alleged misuse of authority, and the vulnerability of ordinary citizens navigating bureaucratic systems. As the investigation progresses, the family continues to seek justice while the city awaits clarity on the circumstances that led to this tragic loss of life.
