Bengaluru [India]: A 32-year-old woman was brutally stabbed to death by her husband in front of her 12-year-old daughter at a bus stand in the city, police said on Monday. The shocking incident has raised concerns over domestic violence and public safety in Bengaluru.
Couple’s background
The victim, identified as Rekha, had been living with the accused, Lohitashwa, before they solemnised their marriage in a temple three months ago. Both had previous marriages — Rekha, a mother of two, had separated from her first husband, while Lohitashwa was divorced.
The couple resided in a rented house in Bengaluru. Rekha’s elder daughter from her first marriage stayed with them, while her younger daughter lived with Rekha’s parents.
Police said Rekha, who worked at a call centre, had helped Lohitashwa secure a driver’s job at the same workplace. However, over time, he allegedly became suspicious of her character and accused her of having an affair with another man.
The crime
On Sunday morning, while Rekha and her daughter were waiting at a bus stop, Lohitashwa confronted her. In a fit of rage, he pulled out a knife and stabbed her repeatedly — reportedly about a dozen times — before fleeing the scene.
Horrified locals and the police rushed Rekha to a private hospital, but despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries.
Police action
A case of murder has been registered at Kamakshipalya Police Station. Authorities are conducting searches to trace the accused, who remains at large. Investigators believe suspicion and domestic disputes led to the violent attack.
Broader concerns
The incident has reignited discussions about rising cases of intimate partner violence in urban areas. Police officials urged citizens to report early signs of abuse or harassment to prevent escalation into tragic outcomes.
Counsellors also emphasised the need for stronger awareness around mental health, marital disputes, and support systems for women in vulnerable domestic situations.
Conclusion
Rekha’s tragic death underscores the urgent need for intervention in domestic disputes and highlights the devastating consequences of unchecked suspicion and violence. Police continue their efforts to apprehend the accused, while the victim’s daughter, who witnessed the attack, remains in the care of relatives.
