A 26-year-old truck driver allegedly died by suicide after testing positive for drunk driving during a routine police inspection in southern Bengaluru, police officials confirmed.
Incident during routine traffic check
The deceased has been identified as Shanmugam, a native of Tamil Nadu. According to police, the incident began late Saturday night when Shanmugam’s truck was stopped near the Outer Ring Road (ORR) around 11 pm as part of a routine drink-and-drive enforcement drive.
During the inspection, officials found that he was intoxicated beyond permissible limits. The truck, registered in Tamil Nadu, was subsequently impounded, and Shanmugam was issued a police notice.
Tragic discovery in impounded vehicle
In the early hours of Sunday, police received information that Shanmugam had died by suicide inside the impounded truck. He was found hanging within the vehicle, officials said.
“The family of the deceased has been informed. As of now, no complaint has been received. Further investigation is underway,” a senior police officer stated.
Probe underway amid concerns
The case is currently being investigated by the JP Nagar police. Authorities are looking into all aspects surrounding the incident, including the sequence of events following the traffic check.
The incident has raised concerns about the psychological distress faced by drivers during enforcement actions and the need for greater awareness and support mechanisms.
