In a deeply upsetting development for Kannada cinema lovers, the memorial of legendary actor Dr Vishnuvardhan at Abhiman Studio, Kengeri, was reportedly demolished overnight under police protection. This move follows a Karnataka High Court order amid a long-standing legal battle over land ownership between the Balanna family (studio owners) and the actor’s fans.

The memorial, which featured an 8-foot statue of the beloved “Sahasa Simha”, was a revered site where the actor was cremated in 2009. Despite passionate appeals from fans to preserve the spot, the structure was torn down—sparking outrage, sorrow, and protests across the state.

Dr Vishnuvardhan, who acted in over 200 Kannada films in a career spanning 35 years, remains one of the most cherished icons in Sandalwood. His memorial held immense emotional significance, especially for fans who viewed it as a sacred place.

Following the dispute, a new official memorial was developed near Mysuru, inaugurated in January 2023. Spread across 2.75 acres, it houses a life-sized statue, a museum with 600 rare photos and personal items, as well as an auditorium and learning center to celebrate his life and legacy. The foundation stone was laid by former CM B.S. Yediyurappa in 2020.

As the demolition news spread, social media exploded with videos, photos, and angry reactions. Hashtags like #JusticeForVishnuvardhan and #SaveVishnuvardhanMemorial began trending, with fans demanding accountability from the government, police, and Film Chamber.
