When Garlic Joins the Drama of High Price in Coastal Karnataka

Garlic Joins the Drama of High Price

In a world where we all love a little more spice in our dishes, life is sure going to be a bit more difficult as garlic prices skyrocket at Rs 450 for a mere kilo. Things are worse in the retail market, where the same vegetable is sold at Rs 540 a kilo.

People now heading to the market to buy some garlic must prepare to see the surge in prices, be it in the wholesale or the retail market.

While onions and tomatoes are normally the vegetables known for doing the drama of the price climb, it looks like the left out garlic has learnt to grab some attention, with this being its first time in the last one decade.

Perhaps the last incident was back in 2013, when the vegetable began to sell itself at Rs. 300 a kilo. This time, the culprit behind this is the large sized garlic that would arrive here from China.

However, there’s less that we can do as North India, which often supplies garlic to coastal Karnataka, has been producing a poor yield for a while, as a result of the weather.

Indians are known to put up a good fight, and our traders are no less, no longer showing any interest in the vegetable. Retail businessmen are no less and don’t see the need to entertain a vegetable that claims to be seen as gold.

After all, you know it’s no laughing matter when a small difference of ten grams brings a difference of more than five.

While we all cross our fingers and hope that the tantrum is for only a while, we have two options. Get used to food without garlic, which is not so bad if you are not a fan of spice.

But this could be hard for someone on the coast, grown accustomed to garlic as a spice. And so, if you are one of them, one of the best solutions at the moment is to try out sauces with garlic as the main ingredients. Who knows, you may like them more than the plain old garlic, which will in turn, learn to be more humble and reasonable with its price.
