Dubai: The inaugural Yuva Olympics 2025, organised by Konkan Yuva, the youth wing of St Mary’s Catholic Church, marked a historic milestone for the Konkani community in the UAE. Held on 9 November at Springdales School, Al Quoz, the sporting festival brought together more than 600 athletes from 18 teams and over 2,500 spectators, celebrating unity, culture and competitive spirit.
Opening ceremony sets the tone for a landmark event
The ceremony began with a grand procession led by Konkan Yuva President Ashwin Pinto, accompanied by guests, past presidents, executive members and the UAE’s only Konkani brass band, Konkan Thaaram.
A coordinated March Past followed, along with a prayer rendered by the Konkan Yuva Choir.
Three flags were then hoisted: the Konkan Yuva Flag by Ullas Fernandes, the Yuva Olympics Flag by Chief Guest Aldrin Lewis, and the UAE Flag by Rev. Fr Jerome Monteiro, Parish Priest of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Pernal.
Rev. Fr Victor Fernandes OFM Cap congratulated the organisers for launching the first athletic meet dedicated to the Konkani community in the UAE.
Torch ceremony honours rising athletes
Five outstanding young athletes lit the Olympic cauldron, symbolising excellence and youth empowerment. They included national and international achievers in roller skating, badminton, athletics, gymnastics and tennis.
The Yuva Olympics Trophy was unveiled, and Chief Guest Aldrin Lewis officially declared the Games open. Sports Secretary Prajwal Lopes administered the Athlete’s Oath.

A celebration of culture, unity and youth empowerment
The event concluded with energetic DJ sessions and vibrant Baila dancing. Konkan Yuva extended heartfelt thanks to sponsors, donors and volunteers, along with Dubai Ambulance Corporation Services for medical support.
