The Hubballi-Dharwad police have intensified efforts to combat the growing drug menace, especially among the youth. The special anti-drug drive was launched in response to recent violent incidents, including the murder of Neha Hiremath, which was linked to narcotics consumption. Over the past three months, the police arrested more than 100 drug peddlers and detained 950 drug users, exposing a widespread network of drug activity across the twin cities.

As part of their strategy, police conducted four phases of operations to apprehend drug consumers and disrupt supply chains. In these phases, a total of 1,800 suspected users underwent drug tests, with 950 testing positive, including 150 students from prestigious institutions. The police focused on areas like schools, colleges, hostels, and PG accommodations to target the spread of drugs among students. Labourers, auto drivers, and other youth were also found to be significant consumers.

Hubballi-Dharwad City Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar stated that the drives have had a noticeable impact on reducing the consumption rate from 63% to 28%. The police are also working on identifying drug hotspots and tracing the sources of drugs, which are linked to states like Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Odisha, and Maharashtra. Special sub-inspectors have been assigned to handle narcotics cases to ensure a thorough crackdown on the illegal trade.

Efforts to curb the drug problem include tracking down drug peddlers, collecting technical evidence, and working closely with intelligence personnel. The police assure the public that any negligence in handling drug cases will result in strict action against the officers involved.
