Bengaluru, September 10: Kannada star Rishab Shetty’s much-awaited folk action thriller Kantara: Chapter 1 is set for a grand worldwide release on October 2. Positioned as a prequel to the 2022 blockbuster Kantara, the film has been mounted on a significantly larger scale and budget, with the makers promising a spectacular cinematic experience.
Mega release plans and record streaming deal
With anticipation soaring, the producers have tied up with leading distribution studios to ensure a massive release across India and international markets. Beyond theatrical expectations, the film has already set a record with its post-theatrical deal.
According to a report by Pinkvilla, Amazon Prime Video has acquired the digital streaming rights for all languages at an estimated ₹125 crore. This marks the second-biggest OTT deal for a Kannada film after KGF: Chapter 2, and one of the most expensive digital acquisitions for any South Indian title.
Industry analysts say the unprecedented deal underscores the rising market for Kannada cinema and the strong pan-India appeal of Shetty’s storytelling.
Trailer launch on September 20
To further fuel excitement, the makers will unveil the official trailer on September 20. Sources close to the production said they expect the launch to amplify the film’s buzz nationwide.
Cast and setting
Directed by Rishab Shetty and produced by Hombale Films, Kantara: Chapter 1 features Shetty in the lead, alongside Rukmini Vasanth and Gulshan Devaiah.
The story is set in pre-colonial coastal Karnataka and delves into the ancient origins of the Bhuta Kola ritual and the mythological narratives around divine guardianship of land. With its cultural depth and grand visuals, the film is being positioned as the biggest pan-India release from Kannada cinema since KGF: Chapter 2.
Growing buzz
Film trade experts note that the combination of a festive release, a record-breaking OTT deal, and the nationwide popularity of Kantara positions the sequel strongly for box office success.
As the release date approaches, expectations are high that Kantara: Chapter 1 will further cement Kannada cinema’s standing in the pan-Indian market.
