Bengaluru: Actor Rukmini Vasanth addressed criticism against Sandalwood, responding to claims that the Kannada film industry lags behind Bollywood, Kollywood, Mollywood, and Tollywood. Speaking at the India Today Conclave South 2025, she emphasised that Sandalwood is producing noteworthy work both on a grassroots level and on a large scale.
Sandalwood’s rising prominence
Rukmini, 28, said, “I come from Sandalwood. I have a bias there. I think there is incredible work happening there and has been happening. It’s a matter of perspective.” She pointed out that Kannada films are gaining attention, alongside massive productions like KGF and Kantara, which have commanded nationwide and international recognition.
Highlighting the growing visibility of Kannada cinema, the actor mentioned the success of ‘Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know…’, a Kannada film that was in contention for the Oscars. “There is stuff happening on a grassroots level as well as on a massive scale. You can’t really work on generality. I am very excited that there is a spotlight on our industry now. It’s an amazing time to be an actor there and from there,” she added.
Praise for fellow actors
Rukmini also shared her experiences working with prominent Kannada actors Rishabh Shetty and Yash. “They are very passionate artists. They are very creative and wonderful human beings. I feel as if I am a sponge, taking in as much as I can while working with them and their approach to work. The sheer passion and commitment to their work is awe-inspiring,” she said.
Upcoming projects
Professionally, Rukmini Vasanth will be seen in Rishabh Shetty’s upcoming film ‘Kantara: Chapter 1’ and Yash’s highly anticipated film ‘Toxic’, marking her continued presence in major Sandalwood productions.
