BEL Donates to NITK Health Care Centre

Mangaluru: Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bengaluru, a Navratna PSU under the Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India, has donated medical and physiotherapy equipment to the Health Care Centre (HCC) at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities.

The equipment, valued at nearly Rs. 10 Lakh, includes an ECG machine, a Thyroid Function Test Analyser, and a range of physiotherapy equipment. This donation by BEL is expected to significantly enhance the quality of medical treatment provided to the NITK community.

The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, is an Institute of National importance through an Act of Parliament (2007) and a Centrally Funded Technical Institute (CFTI) under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. The Institute is home to nearly 7000 students, 1500 Faculty, Staff, and their families, around 600 Retired Employees and their families residing outside the campus, and guests present on the campus for official visits.

A dedicated annexe building for the physiotherapy centre has been established within the NITK campus. This development is a crucial addition to the campus healthcare facilities.

The physiotherapy equipment will provide valuable support to students who sustain sports-related injuries, and addresses the needs of the many aged individuals residing on campus who require regular physiotherapy treatments and find it challenging to commute to the city for the same.

The handing-over ceremony took place on January 11, 2024, at the Digital Library Centre, NITK Surathkal. The esteemed chief guest for the event was  Shrikant Walgad, IAS, Chief Vigilance Officer, BEL, a KREC/NITK 1986 batch alumnus. The event was presided over by the NITK Director, Prof. B. Ravi.

During the inauguration of the Physiotherapy Centre, the Director of NITK said, “Physiotherapy is a widely accepted mode of treatment for mobility and pain relief. The establishment of a well-equipped physiotherapy unit at NITK with the support of Bharat Electronics, BEL, Bengaluru through CSR funding will help to improve the health and wellness of campus residents.

This initiative supports the Fit India movement of the Central Government, which lays stress on physiotherapy, yoga, and exercises.

The event was graced by the esteemed representatives from Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bengaluru. Among them were Shashibhushana H S, DGM of Environmental and Corporate Responsibility, and Ravikant Nayak, Senior Engineer of CSR.

The ceremony witnessed the active participation of representatives from the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK). This included Prof. Srikantha S Rao, Dean of Alumni and Corporate Relations, Prof. G C Mohan Kumar, Dean of Faculty Welfare and Prof. K. V Gangadharan, Dean of Planning and Development, Dr Saumya Hegde, the Professor in charge of HCC, Dr Balabaskar, the Resident Medical Officer of NITK, and other Doctors, PICs, faculty, staff, and students.

Following the handing-over ceremony, a tour of the Physiotherapy Centre was held. During the tour, the invited physiotherapists explained the utility of the donated equipment.
