Mangaluru: The 12th edition of the National CME SCIENTIA (2023) by the Department of Medical Laboratory Technology of Father Muller College of Allied Health Sciences was inaugurated on April 29, 2023, at 10 am in the Decennial Memorial Hall at Father Muller Kankanady Campus.

Dr Sujay Prasad, Consultant Pathologist at Anand Diagnostic Laboratory Bangalore, was the chief guest for the day. He explained that learning happens when questions are asked, and speaking at events like this increases his knowledge. He further explained that information is raw data, understanding raw data is knowledge, and applying this knowledge in daily life gains wisdom. He emphasized the difference between training and knowledge, stating that training is about what you do and how you do it, while education is understanding why you do what you do. Dr Prasad was delighted to see the large number of delegates attending the CME and praised the organizers for their efforts.

Rev. Fr Ajith B Menezes, Administrator FMMC, presided over the inaugural and gave a thoughtful message to the audience. He welcomed the first-time delegates to Father Muller and Mangalore and shared a story of a woodcutter who was employed based on his physique to chop wood. The woodcutter began well at the beginning of the day, but by the end of the day, his output was reduced because he forgot to sharpen his axe. Thus, sharpening one’s mind with updated knowledge is of utmost importance. He also stated that during interviews, the most frequently asked question by him is “What is the book you read and the last book that you have read?”, as it shows the vibrancy and resourcefulness of the individual.

The 2-day event began on April 28, 2023, with quiz competition rounds on the latest Medical Tech and topics from all subjects of Medical Laboratory Technology, including Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pathology, Blood Bank, and Laboratory Quality Management. The CME is designed as an update on various fields of clinical laboratory medicine, with speakers representing a wide array of experts in their fields.

Eminent personalities in the field spoke on interesting topics such as Lean Management, Overview of Quality Management System, Instrument Procurement and Validation, and Chemical Safety in the Laboratory.

Dr Hilda Fernandes, Principal FMCOAHS, Omkareshwar Patil, Organizing Secretary, Dr Nisha J Marla, Organizing Chairperson, and the faculty and staff of Father Muller College of Allied Health Sciences tirelessly worked on the event to make it more delightful for the delegates, who will be laboratory technicians in the near future. Members of the Management Committee and Heads of various departments were present for the inaugural.

MCs Jessica Jerald Serrao and Gopika SS Nair, students of the first-year BSc MLT, hosted the event.
