Easter egg hunting, a cherished tradition for children, is undergoing a change in 2025 due to the soaring prices of eggs in the United States. With egg prices at a record high, many families are opting for alternatives to continue the beloved hunt.

The tradition of Easter egg hunts involves hiding decorated eggs for children to find, symbolizing new life and reflecting the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In some Western cultures, eggs also represent the empty tomb of Jesus. However, this year, soaring egg prices are forcing families to rethink this tradition.

What’s replacing eggs?

Potatoes have become a popular alternative. The idea of coloring potatoes instead of eggs was first suggested in 2023 and has gained traction since. Social media influencers are promoting this idea, with videos showing people dyeing potatoes for their Easter hunts. Other alternatives include marshmallows, plastic eggs, and foil-wrapped eggs. One Instagram user, crowded_kitchen, even shared a recipe for Peanut Butter Easter Eggs that resemble real eggs but are cost-effective and fun to make.

Why the price hike?

The rising egg prices are primarily due to bird flu, which led authorities to cull millions of chickens, causing an egg supply shortage. This shortage has driven prices up, with some areas seeing prices exceed $10 per dozen. In March, the cost of eggs hit a record high of $6.23 per dozen, marking a sharp rise in food inflation.
