Police in Maharashtra’s Thane district have registered a case of abetment of suicide following the death of a 21-year-old air hostess, who was found hanging at her residence in Kalyan (East) late last month.

Found unresponsive at home

According to police, the young woman was discovered hanging from a ceiling hook at her residence in Anusuya Niwas on the night of December 28, 2025. The incident came to light after she failed to respond to repeated phone calls from her mother. A neighbour checked on her and alerted authorities. She was rushed to Rukminibai Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Relationship history and allegations

Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s mother, police said the deceased had been in a relationship with the accused, a 23-year-old man, since 2020. The family alleged that he refused to marry her, threatened to make her private photographs public, and had recently entered into another relationship. These developments, they claimed, caused her severe emotional distress.

Financial transactions and digital evidence

After the last rites, the family examined the woman’s mobile phone and bank statements. Police said chat records suggested repeated harassment and physical assault. Bank records reportedly showed that the accused had taken several lakhs of rupees from the victim on the pretext of marriage, with the latest transfer dated December 16, 2025.

FIR registered, probe underway

Following preliminary verification, Kolsewadi Police Station registered an FIR on January 10 under Section 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police said the investigation is ongoing and further action will be taken based on evidence.
