In a shocking case from Anantapur district, police arrested a couple and eight accomplices for abducting their daughter, a schoolteacher, to forcefully transfer her property and marry her off against her will. The disturbing plot unfolded after the woman, Marutamma, went against her family’s wishes and married a man of her choice.

According to Kalyandurg DSP Ravibabu, Marutamma, a Special Grade teacher posted in Kurakulapalle, had been supporting her aging parents and sister’s family for years. With her earnings, she managed to buy a plot and gold in Anantapur.

Tensions arose when she chose to marry E. Erriswamy, a man from her village who was already married with two children. Her parents, Munige Anand (61) and Sailaja (55), opposed the union. Enraged, they allegedly conspired with others to kidnap her on June 12 while she was with her husband.

She was taken to Bengaluru and held captive at a relative’s house, where she was tortured and coerced to transfer her assets. They also threatened to kill her if she didn’t agree to marry another relative, Yellappa.

Fearing for her life, Marutamma pretended to comply. As the group travelled back to Kalyandurg in an SUV, police — acting on a missing complaint from Erriswamy — intercepted the vehicle and rescued her. The parents and eight others were arrested, while one accused remains on the run.
