Assam : In a tragic incident on Tuesday, a man named Padma Bherua lost his life after being assaulted by an adult wild rhinoceros in Assam’s Majuli district. The unfortunate event unfolded in Bhokot Chapori village under Padumani Police Station.

According to eyewitnesses, the rhino emerged from the nearby forest and traversed the Brahmaputra river early Tuesday morning. Upon entering residential areas, it began attacking locals seemingly out of fear, with Padma tragically falling victim to the aggression.

After the attack, the rhino retreated, leaving behind a scene of shock and distress. Local residents, aided by forest officials, swiftly transported Padma to a nearby public health center, where medical professionals pronounced him dead upon arrival.

The community has voiced frustration towards the forest department, citing a lack of proactive measures to prevent such incidents. Locals highlight that encounters between wild animals, particularly rhinos, and residents crossing the river have occurred previously without sufficient preventive action.

Forest authorities, however, explained that wild animals often venture into populated areas in search of food but can react aggressively when confronted by humans, emphasizing the inherent danger in such encounters.

Police have arranged for Padma’s body to undergo postmortem examination in Jorhat.

This tragic incident echoes a recent event on February 14, where a forest guard sustained severe injuries following an attack by a wild rhino in Kaziranga National Park.
