Nagaon: High drama unfolded in Assam’s Haiboragaon on Monday as authorities denied Congress leader Rahul Gandhi permission to visit the Sri Sri Sankar Dev Satra temple in Bordua. Gandhi, accompanied by other Congress leaders, was halted at Haiboragaon and prevented from proceeding further.
The former Congress chief had planned to pay respects to the local deity before commencing his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra on Monday. Mahila Congress leaders staged a dharna in protest against the denial of permission, with Gandhi himself joining the demonstration.
Authorities stated that Gandhi would be allowed to visit the temple only at 3 PM. Questioning the police’s decision, Gandhi remarked, “Will PM Modi now decide who will visit a temple and when.” He emphasized that they only wanted to pray at the temple without causing any trouble.
Tight security measures, a significant police presence, and road blockades were in effect around the Sri Sri Sankar Dev Satra temple.
