Alappuzha: Muhammad Ihsan, a seven-month-old baby born with severe deformities and life-threatening health issues, finally returned home on Monday after spending nearly five months in hospital care.
Born to Aneesh Muhammad and Surumi of Navaroji Purayidathil in Lajnath ward, Ihsan was discharged around 2:45 pm following a morning medical review. He was accompanied by a team of doctors in an ambulance. Officials from the District Medical Office visited the family home and instructed them to report any emergencies without delay.
Although the infant no longer requires ventilator support, the house has been outfitted with essential medical equipment including an oxygen concentrator, pulse oximeter, and oxygen cylinders. The parents have been trained to operate these devices at home.
Doctors say the baby is showing promising signs of improvement — gaining strength and occasionally opening his eyes.
However, the case has sparked a controversy, as the baby’s deformities were reportedly not detected during prenatal scans. This has led to growing concerns over the quality of antenatal screening and care provided at the hospital.
