New Delhi: Trinamool leader Mahua Moitra‘s plea challenging the notice to vacate her government-allotted residence, following her expulsion from the Lok Sabha, has been disposed of by the Delhi High Court. The court advised Moitra to approach the Directorate of Estates, a department under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs responsible for managing Central government accommodations.

Moitra had filed a plea seeking to quash the January 7 eviction notice and requested the court to direct the government body to allow her to retain the residence until the announcement of the 2024 general election results. Justice Subramoniun Prasad, while disposing of the plea, emphasized that the Directorate of Estates had the authority to permit a resident to overstay for a certain period, provided it adhered to the rules.

The court instructed the government to proceed with eviction only in accordance with the law and allowed Moitra to withdraw her plea. Mahua Moitra, expelled from the Lok Sabha due to alleged “unethical conduct” related to accepting gifts in exchange for posing questions, has challenged her expulsion in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Lok Sabha secretary general in response to Moitra’s plea, seeking a reply within three weeks.
