Delhi: Delhi’s education minister, Atishi, announced on Sunday that schools in the national capital will be closed for the next five days due to the prevailing cold weather conditions, specifically for students from nursery to Class 5. This decision followed the retraction of a previous order by the Delhi government, which had initially extended the winter vacation in schools until January 10.

The confusion arose when the directorate of education issued an order on Saturday, extending the winter vacation for all government and private schools in Delhi. However, a government official later cited an error in the order, leading to its withdrawal.

The revised order stated, “Order No.DE.23(3)/Sch.Br./2024/18 dated: January 6, 2024, regarding the extension of Winter Vacation stands withdrawn with immediate effect. Further orders in this regard may be issued in due course.”

Delhi experienced another day of grey, foggy conditions on Saturday, with a daytime peak temperature of 15.2 degrees Celsius and a low of 8.9 degrees. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted a rise in temperatures over the next two days, and an approaching western disturbance is expected to bring light rain on Tuesday. Officials also indicated that cold day conditions should subside by Sunday.

In a related development, the Gautam Buddh Nagar administration ordered schools in Noida and Greater Noida to observe holidays for students up to Class 8 until January 14 due to dense fog and extreme cold weather conditions. The directive, issued by district Basic Education Officer Rahul Panwar, is applicable to all schools recognized by the state board, CBSE, ICSE, IB, and others.

“In compliance with the instructions given by District Magistrate Maneesh Kumar Verma given the dense fog and extreme cold, all the board (CBSE/ICSE IB, UP Board and others) affiliated schools (from Class nursery to 8) running in the district Gautam Buddh Nagar, will observe holiday till January 14,” the order stated.
