Advani, who served as Deputy Prime Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government and held various ministerial portfolios, has been a stalwart figure in Indian politics for decades, serving in both Houses of Parliament from 1970 to 2019.
Reflecting on Advani’s illustrious career, PM Modi praised his grassroots beginnings and his subsequent rise to national leadership. He commended Advani’s integrity and transparency in public service, citing his exemplary conduct as a benchmark for political ethics.
“Advani Ji’s commitment to transparency and integrity, along with his efforts in promoting national unity and cultural resurgence, have set unparalleled standards,” remarked PM Modi.
Expressing personal sentiment, PM Modi described the occasion as deeply emotional, highlighting his numerous interactions with Advani and the lessons he gleaned from the seasoned leader.
The conferment of the Bharat Ratna on Advani comes after last month’s posthumous recognition of former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur, fondly known as “Jan Nayak” in his state, marking 35 years since his passing.
