Delhi : In a tragic incident, one woman lost her life and 17 others sustained injuries when a platform, constructed of wood and iron frame, collapsed during a Mata Jagran at Delhi’s renowned Kalkaji Mandir, as reported by news agency ANI, citing the Delhi Police.
An elevated platform had been set up near the main stage to accommodate the families of organizers and VIPs. Around 12:30 am, several devotees ascended the stage in excitement during hymn recitations, causing it to collapse under the weight. The collapse resulted in injuries to some individuals seated below the platform, stated the police.

It was revealed by the police that no permission had been granted for the event. Despite this, approximately 1500-1600 people had gathered for the jagrata (overnight awakening) of Goddess Durga, a Hindu ritual involving all-night vigils, songs, dances, and worship in the temple’s Mahant Parisar. Nonetheless, adequate staff had been deployed to maintain law and order.
“We received a call around 12:30 am reporting the collapse of a stage set up for ‘jagran’ purposes at Kalkaji temple. Teams were dispatched to the scene. Sadly, one woman was declared dead. Further investigation is underway,” a senior police officer was quoted.
Singer B Praak, who was present at the event, expressed sorrow over the incident. In a video message shared on his Instagram story, the singer emphasized the crucial role of event management.
“This is the first time I’ve witnessed such an unfortunate incident firsthand, and I’m deeply saddened by it. What occurred while I was performing at Kalkaji Mandir is truly tragic,” he conveyed in the video message.
Following the tragic accident, the city police’s crime team conducted an investigation at the site. The injured individuals were admitted to various hospitals, including the AIIMS Trauma Centre and Safdarjung Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. The condition of the injured is reported to be stable, with a few sustaining fractures.
The police have registered a case under sections 337/304A/188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the organizers, as stated by authorities.
