New Delhi: Assembly election were held today, December 7, in five states- Telangana, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Mizoram. The results of these elections will be declared on December 11.
These five states saw the major parties – the Congress and the BJP – fight it out while leaving no stone unturned. The election battle was even taken to the national level, where AICC chief Rahul Gandhi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi hurled attacks and abuses at each other.
The exit polls in MP show Congress and the BJP, neck and neck in the fight, where the battle is predominantly between three-time Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and his rivals Jyotiraditya Scindia, Kamal Nath and Digvijaya Singh.
Whereas in Chhattisgarh, it looks like the Congress will form the single largest party, however, it isn’t going beyond the majority mark. If the Congress is able to gain a majority, they will be successful in their attempts to unseat Chief Minister Raman Singh, who is seeking his fourth term. Some of the main issues used by the Congress in the campaign were Maoism, tribal welfare and development.
In Telangana, it looks like the TRS looks will overpower the Congress-TDP alliance to take the house. However, in Rajasthan, exit polls show that the Congress might sweep Rajasthan away easily. Here, the Congress party was banking on the anti-incumbency factor against the Vasundhara Raje-led government.
