Bareilly: Years after moving to Mumbai, Priyanka Chopra’s name has made a surprise appearance on her old home’s voters’ list.
Seventeen years after actor Priyanka Chopra moved to Mumbai along with her family, post her 2000 Miss World win, her name is still present in Bareilly’s electoral rolls prepared for the civic body elections by the administration.
Abhijit Mukherji, assistant district election officer explained that before each election a survey is conducted in order to make sure that there is no duplication in the names of voters in the event that they have moved elsewhere. He claimed that a mistake had been made by the block level officer who prepared the electoral roll for the upcoming election. He also assured that action would be taken against those responsible for the error.
Quite contrary to the reactions of Abhijit Mukherji, Chopra’s old neighbours were delighted to find out that her name still appeared on the list and said that they would ask her to use her franchise.
An old neighbour of Chopra’s, Saurabh Saxena will be contesting in the election for the councillor’s post in the Bareilly Municipal Corporation (BMC) from her old ward no. 56.
Saxena and his brother were going over the electoral rolls, in preparation for the election, when they spotted Chopra’s name on the list. They said that it was a “pleasant surprise” to find her name on the list and added that they would try and contact her on “Twitter and request her to come and cast her vote.”
Saxena plans to visit each person in his ward and even approach those out of town via social media.
Chopra’s mother Madhu’s name has also appeared in the list of voters, despite having moved to Mumbai years ago.
