New Delhi: At the Shambhu border, close to Ambala, the Haryana Police used tear gas shells on Tuesday, including ones fired by drones, to scatter farmers who were marching toward Delhi to demand the passage of a minimum support price law.

Farmers used tractors to remove cement blocks that the police had placed on the Ghaggar River bridge to stop them from moving forward, causing chaotic scenes to unfold at the border, according to PTI.

The police used tear gas shells to calm the situation, citing protesters’ stone-throwing as the cause.Protesters threw stones at the Haryana police. Tear gas shells were being used to control the situation, a spokeswoman for the Haryana police said.

“No one will be allowed to create disturbance. Those doing so will be dealt with strictly,” the spokesperson said, asserting that “the situation is completely under control,” reported PTI.

Despite tear gas being deployed, farmers attempted to minimize its impact by covering shells with jute bags and using wet clothes.

Initially, tear gas was used when some youths broke an iron barricade and attempted to throw it off the bridge. Despite police appeals, many protesters remained adamant.

As more farmers gathered, tear gas was again used to disperse them, even as some entered nearby fields. The police also employed drones to monitor the crowd and deploy tear gas shells, as per the PTI report.

Farmers who were protesting denounced the Haryana government’s policies and persisted in their march towards Delhi in support of MSP legislation.

Farmers earlier started their “Delhi Chalo” march in response to fruitless discussions about their demands—including legal guarantees for MSP—with Union ministers.

Farmers will travel to Delhi, according to the announcements of the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political), to advocate for their demands, which include a law guaranteeing a Minimum Support Price for crops.
