IDUKKI: The scenic hill district of Idukki is preparing to roll out a comprehensive heritage tourism project aimed at preserving and promoting its rich historical and cultural landmarks. Spearheaded by the district administration in collaboration with the Tourism Department and the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), the initiative seeks to give a fresh boost to the region’s tourism sector by highlighting its unique past.

At a recent stakeholders’ meeting, District Collector V. Vigneshwari announced that the project would soon be launched. Authorities have already begun collecting data on key heritage locations across the district, which include British-era churches, cemeteries, bridges, tribal art forms, dolmens, menhirs, and colonial-era estate bungalows.

“Idukki holds vast potential for heritage tourism. Preserving and presenting these historical landmarks will offer a unique experience for visitors,” said an official involved in the project.

One key highlight will be a focused plan to restore and promote the St. George CSI Church at Pallikunnu near Kuttikkanam — a striking example of Gothic architecture built during the British period. The Tourism Department is currently preparing a detailed proposal, following directives issued by Tourism Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas during his March visit.

Collector Vigneshwari also revealed plans to launch a dedicated tourism website and improve visitor amenities at major attractions, including the iconic Idukki Dam. An Idukki Plaza will be developed to offer essential tourist facilities, while a climate alert SOP will ensure safe travel during adverse weather.
