Srinagar: National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah has strongly rebutted claims made by Ghulam Nabi Azad, the President of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), regarding alleged secret nighttime meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Abdullah expressed his dismay, stating that if he were to meet with PM Modi or Home Minister Shah, it would be during daylight hours, questioning Azad’s motives for tarnishing his reputation. He highlighted his past support for Azad, including providing him with a Rajya Sabha seat when others wouldn’t. Abdullah accused Azad of attempting to smear his image and demanded that Azad disclose the identities of any intermediaries allegedly facilitating nighttime meetings.
In response to Abdullah’s comments, Azad clarified that he did not claim Abdullah directly met with PM Modi, but rather suggested through Delhi sources that Abdullah seeks to engage with central leadership exclusively at night, without stating any actual meetings.
Meanwhile, Farooq Abdullah, in a separate announcement, declared that the National Conference would contest the upcoming parliamentary elections independently, signaling a departure from the opposition INDIA bloc. He emphasized the party’s decision to go solo in the polls during a press briefing in Srinagar, dismissing any speculation about potential seat sharing arrangements.
Omar Abdullah, son of Farooq Abdullah and a prominent leader within the National Conference, later provided clarification on his father’s statements.
