According to police, a 36-year-old Kerala woman passed away during childbirth on Tuesday because her husband refused to take her to the hospital and instead allowed an acupuncturist to try delivering the baby at their Thiruvananthapuram home.
After her husband Nayas, a sound system worker, insisted that she give birth to their fourth child at home, Shameera Biwi passed away from severe bleeding. Nayas was taken into custody by the police, and an unnatural death case was filed.
Nayas refused to let the couple’s neighbors into the house after they had complained to the local health officials about the woman’s lack of assistance being taken to a hospital. Medical personnel reported that they had spoken with Shameera once, and she informed them that her husband was a frequent critic of modern medicine.
According to Ward Councillor Deepika, Nayas also stated that she watched YouTube videos to carry out a typical home delivery, as reported by news agency PTI.
On Tuesday, Shameera went into labor, and things got complicated. After being brought to a hospital in the evening, both she and the baby were pronounced dead.
Health workers said that despite the fact that all three of her children were delivered by C-section, she was denied access to medical care for the entire nine months of her pregnancy. Only a man named Shihab, who owned a nearby acupuncture clinic, was permitted to treat her..
Police is also investigating the role of Nayas’ daughter, from his first wife, who was reportedly studying acupuncture.
