Kochi: A woman and her live-in partner are in police custody for allegedly murdering her one-month-old child. The suspects, identified as Aswathy and Shanif, both residents of Alappuzha, are currently being interrogated following a postmortem report that pointed to the child’s death as a result of foul play.

The distressing incident came to light when the couple took the infant to the General Hospital in Ernakulam on December 2. Sadly, the doctors declared the child dead on arrival, expressing suspicion about the injuries. Promptly alerting the police, the doctors’ concerns were validated when a postmortem examination revealed fatal head injuries.

Escaping from the hospital after learning about the child’s demise, the couple was tactically convinced by the police to come to the station for a statement. During the interrogation, Shanif reportedly confessed to the crime, implicating himself in the child’s death. Aswathy, the mother, claimed to be asleep during the incident, but the police remain skeptical about her involvement.

According to the postmortem findings, the child suffered a fatal head injury on December 2, allegedly inflicted by Shanif. In a disturbing revelation, it is reported that Shanif bit the child in an attempt to ascertain if it was still alive. The couple, who had a dispute over the baby, had planned to abandon the child. Aswathy was four months pregnant when she met Shanif.

The police are expected to officially record the arrest of the couple, and a special investigation team has been formed by the Ernakulam Central police to delve into the background of the suspects. Shanif, a Kannur native, had met Aswathy through social media, and the couple had been residing in various lodges since then. The police investigation aims to uncover the full extent of the tragic incident and the circumstances leading to the murder of the innocent child.
