The Kerala Police have initiated legal proceedings against Professor A Shaija of the National Institute of Technology-Calicut (NIT) following complaints filed by various student bodies. The case stems from a Facebook comment made by Professor Shaija expressing admiration for Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi, for purportedly “saving India.” Under IPC Section 153, the police have registered a case for wantonly giving provocation with the intent to cause riot.
Professor Shaija, a senior faculty member in the mechanical engineering department at NIT-Calicut, commented on a post by a lawyer praising Godse’s actions. The comment, in which she stated she was “proud of Godse for saving India,” sparked controversy and was subsequently deleted.
MK Raghavan, the Member of Parliament for Kozhikode (Calicut), condemned Professor Shaija’s remarks, expressing his disappointment and calling for appropriate action by the authorities. In response, Professor Shaija defended her comment, stating that she did not intend to endorse Gandhi’s assassination but rather referenced revelations in Godse’s book “Why I Killed Gandhi,” which she claimed shed light on lesser-known aspects of history.
The incident has brought further attention to NIT-Calicut, which has recently faced controversies, including a dispute over the celebration of the Ram temple consecration where students drew a saffron-colored map of India on the institute’s gate, leading to a confrontation among students.
