Landslide devastates homes; MLA promises Rs 3 crore for infrastructure boost
MANGALURU: Intense and continuous rainfall over the past few days has caused widespread waterlogging and significant damage to homes across Mangaluru, with Kannur among the hardest-hit areas.
A major landslide at Dayambu Gudde in Kannur, triggered by overnight rains, destroyed five houses. Families of Hameed Ustad, Maimuna, Saadiq, and Shenaaz were among those severely impacted.
Saadiq, recounting the terrifying moment, said, “Around 3 am, the hill behind our houses gave way due to the downpour. With no proper drainage to channel the water, we tried clearing paths daily, but the rainfall was too intense. Eventually, the slope collapsed, destroying five homes.”
Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath visited the site along with former Kannur ward corporator Chandravathi to assess the extent of damage. Kamath acknowledged the area’s poor infrastructure and promised immediate steps.
“Over 100 homes near the railway track here lack proper road access,” Kamath said. “I will allocate ₹3 crore from the minority welfare fund to develop roads wide enough for four-wheelers. During emergencies, people still carry patients by foot. We also intend to build an underpass and are working with the railway department for approvals.”
He added that a new road project is already underway and discussions have begun with Minister V Somanna to expedite solutions.
