Lucknow: In a heartbreaking incident that has shocked the city, a real estate dealer in Lucknow ended his life by suicide after expressing helplessness over affording medical care for his diabetic daughter. The man, identified as Shahzeb Shakeel, reportedly shot himself in his office on Thursday using a security guard’s firearm.

Before taking the extreme step, Shahzeb went live on Facebook, recording a video in which he tearfully appealed to celebrities and industrialists for help. In the video, he cited crippling debt and an inability to buy insulin for his young daughter as the reasons for his despair.

Emotional video sparks last-minute efforts

As the video circulated on social media, Shahzeb’s family rushed to alert the police. However, despite the urgency, authorities arrived too late. By the time they reached the scene, he had already taken his own life.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Shahzeb had accumulated debts running into several crores of rupees. His business had reportedly been struggling for some time, which worsened his financial situation and mental health. Sources said he had become increasingly withdrawn in recent weeks.

Investigation and legal action

Police have launched an investigation into the incident, including how Shahzeb obtained access to the guard’s weapon, a breach of protocol that is now under scrutiny. The firearm, registered to a private security personnel, is being examined as part of the forensic process.

A case has been registered under relevant sections, and officials said they are also looking into possible violations related to firearm security and workplace safety. Shahzeb’s phone and social media communications have been seized to understand more about his state of mind and any final communications he may have had.

Public response and wider implications

The tragedy has sparked public outrage and renewed conversations around mental health, economic stress, and access to healthcare. Social media users expressed sympathy for Shahzeb’s family, particularly for his daughter, while others called on the government to do more for families in distress.

Several non-profits and healthcare advocacy groups have highlighted the rising cost of life-saving medication like insulin, urging for policy reforms and subsidy programs. Some users have also urged stricter checks on licensed firearms and security protocols in workplaces.

The incident follows a troubling pattern of suicide cases in India linked to financial hardship, especially among small business owners and self-employed individuals who have been hit hard by economic uncertainty in recent years.
