Visakhapatnam: R Appala Naidu (27), who was one of the six convicted in a ganja smuggling case, here in Vishakapatnam slit his throat in the open court hall of the Metropolitan Court’s premises soon after his conviction was finalised. He was awarded with a 14-year term in prison and a fine of Rs 1 lakh under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
According to reports, Appala became emotional after the conviction and took out a knife from his pocket and slit his throat, the police immediately came into action and took him to Vishakaptanam King George Hospital and now is being held there for his treatmnent.
Previously, Appala Naidu who is from MK Patnam in Rolugunta of Vishakapatanam district was arrested by Kothakoata police in a case in 2016 where he along with eight others were alleged of smuggling at least 300 kilos of dry ganja.
According to town inspector GV Ramana, Appala was upset about the judgement and decided to end his life and that now he would need to undergo surgery as he is in critical condition
