Jamshedpur (Jharkhand): A fire broke out in East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand on Saturday, causing extensive damage to over 15 firecracker stalls, a dozen motorcycles, and a pickup van. The incident occurred near a bustling weekly market (‘haat’) organized in Kerukocha village for the upcoming Tusu festival scheduled to commence on Monday.

Despite the intensity of the blaze, no casualties were reported, according to Ghatsila Sub-divisional Police Officer Kuldip Toppo. Investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of the fire, and fortunately, prompt action by a fire tender helped extinguish the flames after an hour-long effort.

The fire originated in an illegally set up firecracker stall near the market, quickly spreading to 14 other stalls. Additionally, 13 motorcycles and a pickup van fell victim to the inferno, as stated by Shyamsunderpur police station officer-in-charge Dilip Kumar. The stalls were reportedly unauthorized, and measures will be taken against the traders responsible.

Sameer Mohanty, the local JMM MLA who visited the scene, expressed regret over the incident, emphasizing that the ‘haat’ is an annual tradition before the Tusu festival, attracting large crowds for shopping. He estimated the losses incurred at around ₹10-15 lakh due to the unfortunate incident this year.
