New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with the distraught families of eight Indian Navy veterans who have been sentenced to death in Qatar. After the meeting, Jaishankar expressed the government’s unwavering commitment to securing the release of the detainees, emphasizing that the case is of the utmost importance.

Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), Jaishankar stated, “Met this morning with the families of the 8 Indians detained in Qatar. Stressed that the Government attaches the highest importance to the case. Fully share the concerns and pain of the families. Underlined that the Government will continue to make all efforts to secure their release. Will coordinate closely with the families in that regard.”

The eight Navy veterans, all formerly employed with the Indian Navy and later working for a private company Dahra Global, were arrested in August 2022 under undisclosed charges, believed to be related to espionage. The Qatar court’s decision to sentence them to death on October 26 sent shockwaves through India, prompting immediate action from the government.

Jaishankar’s reassurance comes as a ray of hope for the families of the detainees, who have been anxiously awaiting updates on their loved ones’ fate. The government’s commitment to the case signals a determined effort to navigate the complexities of international law and secure the release of the Indian nationals.

The families, deeply concerned and distressed, have found solace in the government’s proactive stance. As diplomatic efforts intensify, the nation watches anxiously, hoping for a positive resolution and the safe return of the Indian Navy veterans from Qatar.
