New Delhi: Member of Parliament, Dakshina Kannada, Nalin Kumar Kateel raised the issue of the Mangaluru-Dubai Air India Express flight skidding on the taxiway of Mangaluru International Airport (MIA), in the “Zero Hour” of Lok Sabha, here on Tuesday, July 2 and pressed for the long pending demand of runway extension.
Recalling the tragic May 22, 2010 when an Air India Express flight crash landed killing 158 lives, the MP said that the main reason for the crash was a short tabletop runway.
“On June 30, another AIE Mangaluru-Dubai flight would have met the same fate as it skid at the taxiway, merely few seconds after landing. However, the pilot’s presence of mind saved the passengers and the crew members. Therefore, I urge the Centre to take necessary action to extend the runway,” he said also demanding a probe into the June 30 incident.
