Mumbai:
The Mumbai Police have placed the city on high alert after receiving a disturbing WhatsApp message warning of an imminent terror strike. The threat, which surfaced on 5 September 2025, claimed that 34 vehicles carrying human bombs and nearly 400 kg of RDX explosives had been deployed by 14 Pakistani terrorists to target crowded locations during the Ganesh Visarjan immersion ceremonies.
Nature of the threat
The anonymous message alleged that the explosives-laden vehicles were already in place across Mumbai. The claim of using “human bombs” heightened fears, suggesting suicide attacks designed to cause maximum damage. The timing of the threat, coinciding with one of Mumbai’s largest annual religious gatherings, was particularly alarming for security officials.
Security measures and investigation
Immediately after receiving the message, Mumbai Police issued a citywide alert. Senior officials from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Crime Branch and Special Branch joined the probe. Security was tightened along immersion routes, at major railway stations, bus depots, and public places. Police personnel conducted surprise checks on vehicles, increased patrolling, and urged citizens to report any suspicious activity without delay.
Authorities also stressed that while the authenticity of the message was under investigation, no threat could be taken lightly in view of Mumbai’s past terror history.
Historical context of threats
Mumbai has faced repeated terror threats over the decades, from the 1993 serial bomb blasts to the 2006 train bombings and the 2008 26/11 attacks, which killed over 160 people. Even in recent years, hoax bomb threats have occasionally disrupted city life, but officials emphasised that each warning must be handled with utmost seriousness.
Public response and caution
While the news of the threat spread quickly, police appealed to citizens not to panic or circulate rumours on social media. Special helplines have been set up for reporting suspicious movements, and local organisers of Ganesh mandals have been briefed to stay vigilant during the immersion processions.
Conclusion
Though the investigation is still underway, Mumbai remains on high alert, with security forces leaving no stone unturned to ensure the safe and peaceful completion of Ganesh Visarjan festivities. The episode underlines the continuing vulnerability of metropolitan cities to terror threats and the importance of constant vigilance.
