Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the war game “Bharat Shakti” in Pokhran, Rajasthan, on March 12, the eve of the announcement of the 2024 General Elections. The exercise will only use weapons platforms and systems that are domestically developed. Leading figures from the tri-services, including Gen. Anil Chauhan, the Chief of Defence Staff, will be present at the war game.
Prime Minister Modi is anticipated to encourage the military leadership to develop a revolution in military affairs that is led by tactics and specifically focused on India, taking into account the country’s unique geography and security threats to Bharat, as a demonstration of his “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” concept.
It is understood that for ‘Bharat Shakti’, the war game will test the efficacy of Indian-made platforms and network-centric systems. While the Indian Army is 100 per cent indigenized, work is on to achieve indigenization in the technology-centric Indian Air Force and Indian Navy in the areas of submarine construction and aircraft engine manufacturing.
The exercise will also test the resilience and integrity of indigenous communication systems and networks to ensure that the enemy cannot hack into them during hostile conditions. This apart, the entire focus of the ‘Bharat Shakti’ exercise will be synergy among the three services which often tend to operate within their own silos. On display will be Tejas fighter aircraft, K-9 artillery guns, indigenous drones, Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launchers and short-range missiles.
The three services have concentrated on developing technologies like secure mobile telephony developed by the Indian Army since PM Modi’s clear call for “Aatmanirbhar Bharat.” The three services have tested the resilience of the secure mobile phone, which is based on imported phone devices and a private Indian operator, but all calls are fully encrypted. The top brass of the three services are now testing the phone as a pilot project; it has been tested against hacking. To further increase the lethality of the Indian armed forces, PM Modi will interact with the top brass during the war game while utilizing all of the country’s network-centric indigenous systems.
