Chennai: The Chennai Police have initiated legal proceedings against the son and daughter-in-law of DMK leader Karunanidhi, accusing them of mistreating an 18-year-old girl who was previously employed at their residence, according to police sources. The police officer handling the case refrained from disclosing specific details but mentioned difficulties in reaching the girl for questioning.

The young woman, belonging to a scheduled caste and aspiring to pursue medical studies through the NEET entrance exam, had taken up domestic work to afford coaching for the exam.

She had reportedly been employed at the DMK leader’s son’s house for the past year. Medical professionals who examined her allegedly discovered signs of physical abuse, including injuries and possible cigarette burns.

Following her treatment at an Ulundurpet hospital, concerned doctors notified the local police station. Authorities are attempting to communicate with the victim to register a case officially, but both she and her family remain inaccessible, raising suspicions of evasion.

Regarding allegations of cigarette burns, the police officer stated, “Doctors indicate that the injuries are not recent. Only through a thorough investigation will we ascertain the facts.” Kathir, the Executive Director of Evidence at a nonprofit organization, has urged a comprehensive inquiry into the matter and the imposition of strict measures against the accused couple.

Karunanidhi has vehemently denied the accusations, dismissing them as “politically motivated.” The situation remains under investigation, and clarity is expected to emerge as authorities continue their efforts to reach the victim and her family.
