A 17-year-old girl was found hanging at her residence in the Itahri police station area of Saharsa district on Saturday evening, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Parvati Kumari. According to officials, her family members were preparing for her last rites when police received information and intervened. The body was seized and sent for post-mortem examination. It was handed back to the family on Sunday.

Family cites emotional distress

Parvati’s family alleged that she was upset after discovering that her boyfriend, Pandav Kumar (19), was a performer in a local dance troupe. They claimed she felt betrayed after learning about his profession.

Her brother, Ganesh Kumar, said the couple had planned to marry in August with the consent of both families. “Parvati was shocked when she came to know about Pandav’s profession,” he stated.

Police said Pandav reportedly performed in ‘launda’ dance programmes to support his family.

Probe under way, report awaited

Khushboo Kumari, Station House Officer of Itahri police station, said the exact cause of death will be determined after the autopsy report is received. The forensic science team and police collected samples from the house as part of the investigation.

Officials added that further action will be taken based on the post-mortem findings.

Parvati’s father, who works as a construction labourer in Mughalsarai, was not present at home on the day of the incident.
