Aligarh, UP: Security arrangements have been tightened in UP’s Aligarh after the death of Mukhtar Ansari, who suffered cardiac arrest on Thursday night.

According to IG Aligarh Range Shalabh Mathur, a flag march was conducted by the police in the region, and a state-wide alert has been issued.

“After the demise of Mukhtar Ansari, a state-wide alert has been activated. Additionally, heightened vigilance has been instated in the local vicinity. The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Aligarh is currently coordinating efforts. Our police force will actively monitor and counter any misinformation circulating on social media platforms,” Mathur stated.

The notorious gangster was admitted to the hospital at approximately 8:25 PM, as per the hospital’s official statement. A team of nine medical professionals attended to him before his passing.

The Samajwadi Party expressed condolences via a Twitter post, acknowledging Mukhtar Ansari’s former role as an MLA and extending sympathies to his family.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Surendra Rajput criticized the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh Government, calling for a thorough investigation into Ansari’s death while in custody.

Naseem Haider, Ansari’s lawyer, stated to ANI, “Upon receiving information of his presence here, I came to the hospital.”

Earlier in the week, Ansari was hospitalized in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda after experiencing abdominal pain. He was subsequently transferred to Uttar Pradesh’s Rani Durgawati Medical College following his discharge.

Ansari, a five-time MLA from Mau assembly seat, held significant influence in Ghazipur, his hometown.

In legal matters, Ansari was convicted in April 2023 for the murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Additionally, on March 13, 2024, he received a life sentence for a case related to the use of forged documents to obtain an arms license in 1990.

In December 2023, Ansari was found guilty by the MP/MLA Court of Varanasi for threatening a witness in the murder case of coal businessman Nand Kishor Rungta, resulting in a five-and-a-half-year prison term and a fine of ₹10,000.

Moreover, on October 15 of the previous year, the Enforcement Directorate seized lands, a building, and bank deposits totaling over ₹73.43 lakh as part of a money laundering investigation involving Ansari.
