The father of the minor accused of fatally ramming an SUV into 23-year-old Sahil Dhaneshra in Dwarka earlier this month has described the incident as a “mistake” and expressed deep regret.

Speaking to the media, he said, “I am also a parent. It was a mistake. I am very, very sorry,” adding that his family is distressed over the tragedy.

The February 3 crash

According to the Delhi Police, the accident occurred around noon on February 3 near Lal Bahadur Shastri College in West Delhi. The Scorpio SUV, allegedly driven by the 16-year-old without a valid driving licence, collided head-on with Sahil’s motorcycle. The impact also struck a parked cab, seriously injuring its driver.

The minor was detained and produced before the Juvenile Justice Board, which later granted interim bail citing his Class 10 board examinations. He is scheduled to surrender again in March.

Father’s response

The father stated he was not in Delhi at the time of the crash and claimed he was unaware his son had taken the vehicle. Addressing past traffic violations linked to the SUV, he said the car was used for business purposes and driven by employed drivers.

He denied allegations that the teen was performing stunts for social media content, saying a family member was merely recording videos.

Grief and accountability

Sahil’s mother has rejected the characterisation of the incident as a “mistake,” alleging reckless driving and demanding stricter accountability.

The case has reignited debate over juvenile driving, parental responsibility and road safety enforcement in the capital.

Investigations continue as authorities review CCTV footage and forensic findings.
