THRISSUR: A 60-year-old woman, Jayasree, who sustained critical burn injuries in a gas cylinder explosion at her home in Vellangallur, passed away late Tuesday night at a private hospital in Ernakulam. She had suffered 95% burns. Her husband, Ravindran (70), also injured in the incident, remains in critical condition under intensive care.

The explosion occurred around 2 PM on Tuesday at their residence in Erumathadam, shortly after the couple returned from a birthday celebration in Cherpu. It is suspected that gas had leaked into the house and ignited when they switched on the lights. Although the LPG cylinders were reportedly stored outside, the gas may have seeped indoors.

The blast was powerful enough to destroy the iron front door and engulf every room in flames, causing extensive property damage. Fire and rescue teams from Irinjalakuda rushed to the scene along with local police to carry out rescue and containment operations.

Jayasree’s funeral is scheduled for Wednesday, following completion of legal formalities and post-mortem procedures. The tragic incident has left the community in shock and raised concerns over gas safety measures in households.
