Belagavi: District police have arrested a BJP councillor on charges of murdering a woman in Sankeshwar.
Umesh Kamble, a member of the Sankeshwar Town Municipal Council and a BJP activist, is the accused.
On the eve of Sankranti festival, Shailaja aliyas Gourawwa Subhedar (55) was found shot to death in her home near Sansuddi Galli corner in Sankeshwar Town.
Following the incident, an investigative team led by PI Ramesh Chayagol and PSI Ganapati Kongnoli had been formed by SP Laxman Nimbaragi and Additional SP Mahaling Nandagavi. The police learnt of a financial dispute during the primary investigation since the deceased was a money lender.
According to sources, the deceased Shailaja had been lending money to the accused Kamble for interest, and she had lent over Rs. 25 lakh to him. The accused devised a plan to kill Shailaja as she began pressuring him to repay the amount with interest.
Kamble went to Sangli, Maharashtra, and acquired a country-made pistol, which he used to shoot Shailaja. Police are on the lookout for two more accused in the case. SP Laxman Nimbargi praised Sankeshwar police for arresting the accused within three days of the incident.
