Belagavi: Belagavi now has something to look forward to as the transport minister announced the recent launch of 50 new buses that will be added in the district.

The inauguration took place virtually at the Harigeri bus stand in the Raibag taluk of Belagavi. Transport minister, Ramalinga Reddy, who inaugurated the event also rewarded 38 bus drivers for their services with silver medals.

The buses, which were launched on Sunday are not just environment friendly but come with modern facilities like electronic vehicle stability control systems.

There is an onboard diagnostic system too that technicians can use in case of an emergency. The buses come with CCTV cameras too, to ensure the passenger’s safety.

Overall, the entire project, which cost 4 crores, has proved to be a success, henceforth allowing the residents of Belagavi to travel safely and comfortably.

This was a much-needed project as Belagavi sees five lakh residents using state run buses, with more than half of them being women.

And this is just the beginning, as the minister spoke about a plan to introduce 15,000 more buses, with five thousand of them arriving in the second quarter of this year.

This will mean jobs for 2000 more drivers and conductors that the minister also made a mention of in the course of the event.

The government is also on its way to doubling the drivers compensation to families in the case of death while on duty. The drivers who, right now, enjoy a compensation of 50 lakh will soon see this extended to one crore.
