Bengaluru: The heavily injured elephant Sidda was finally lifted by a crane on Thursday and moved to temporary enclosure by the Indian Army personnel at Manchanabele.

Sidda who was lying down more than two months will now recuperate at the new enclosure set by Madras Engineering Group (MEG). The jumbo is now poised suspended a few feet from the ground and the vets are ready to treat him.

The MEG personnel along with the Karnataka Forest Department and a couple of wildlife NGOs lifted the wounded tusker in an operation which took 17 hours, beginning at 11.30 am Wednesday and ending 4.30 am Thursday.

It may be recalled, on August 30, Sidda had suffered injuries to its legs and shoulders when it fell into a ditch at Dodderi. The Forest department then escorted it back to Savandurga. However, crippled with severe pain, the elephant was spotted floating in the backwaters of the reservoir. Its foreleg was broken and pus-filled. Sidda was spotted spending a lot of time in the backwaters of the Manchabele reservoir.
