Bengaluru: Former Hirekerur MLA U. B. Banakar will officially join the Congress party on the evening of November 21.

The ceremony will be held in the presence of KPCC President D. K. Shivakumar, Opposition Leader Siddaramaiah and other officials are expected to attend the event.

Banakar resigned from his positions as Chairman of the Karnataka Warehousing Corporation and Director of the Veerashaiva Lingayat Development Corporation on November 9 along with his primary membership in the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Banakar was twice elected to the Karnataka legislature, once in 1994 on a BJP ticket and again in 2013 on a Karnataka Janata Paksha (KJP) ticket.

He held a meeting with his supporters and gathered their opinions before deciding to join Congress. He will likely run on a Congress ticket from the Hirekerur constituency.

The party leaders believe that with Banakar on board, Congress’s strength in the Hirekerur constituency will grow.
