Bengaluru’s public transport took a big green leap on Friday as the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) inducted 148 new non-AC electric buses into service.

Transport and Muzrai Minister Ramalinga Reddy flagged off the buses at BMTC’s Central Office in Shanthinagar. The launch also introduced new express routes and package tour services, aimed at making city commuting more efficient.

With the latest additions, BMTC’s electric fleet now stands at 1,436 buses, significantly reducing the city’s carbon footprint. According to BMTC estimates, these e-buses prevent nearly 2.07 lakh kg of carbon dioxide emissions daily and save about 77,000 litres of diesel each day.

Key Features of the New Buses:
✅ 298 kWh battery packs
✅ 35 seats + wheelchair space
✅ Kneeling mechanisms and ramps for accessibility
✅ Panic buttons for women’s safety
✅ Voice announcement systems

The buses will operate primarily out of Depot-4 in Jayanagar, with charging stations set up at major hubs, including Kempegowda Bus Station, KR Market, Shivajinagar, BTM Layout, Hebbala, Mallasandra, and Bannerghatta TTMC.

BMTC also announced plans to phase in 195 AC electric buses soon, along with an ambitious target of adding 4,500 more electric buses to its fleet in the coming years.

This move reinforces Bengaluru’s commitment to sustainable, commuter-friendly urban mobility.
