New Delhi: Buying a new car is usually a moment of joy and pride, marked by rituals, blessings, and celebrations. But in Nirman Vihar, East Delhi, what began as a happy occasion for a young couple turned into a dramatic accident inside a showroom.
On Monday evening, 29-year-old Maani Pawar and her husband Pradeep had just purchased a brand-new Mahindra Thar Rox, priced at around ₹27 lakh. Like many families, they decided to perform a traditional ritual before taking the vehicle home.
Ritual goes wrong
The ritual involved placing a lemon under the tyre and gently driving over it, a practice followed in several parts of India to ward off negativity and bring good luck. However, during the ceremony, things went terribly wrong.
Instead of lightly pressing the accelerator, Maani reportedly pressed it too hard. The Thar surged forward, smashed through the showroom’s glass wall, and plunged nearly 15 feet onto the pavement outside.
Inside the vehicle at the time were Maani, her husband Pradeep, and a salesman named Vikas, who had been explaining the car’s features.
Minor injuries reported
Thanks to the timely deployment of airbags, all three escaped with only minor injuries. Maani was admitted to Malik Hospital in Nirman Vihar for first aid and later discharged. Both Pradeep and the salesman also sustained minor injuries and did not require hospitalisation.
The accident, however, caused significant property damage. The showroom’s glass façade was shattered, and the vehicle overturned on the pavement. A parked motorcycle was also damaged in the mishap.
Video goes viral on social media
The entire incident was caught on video, which quickly spread across social media platforms. Netizens reacted with shock and sympathy, with many also pointing out the need for greater caution during car delivery rituals.
While the visuals of the SUV crashing through the glass wall were dramatic, police officials said the consequences could have been far worse.
Police confirmation
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Abhishek Dhania confirmed that a medico-legal case (MLC) was filed around 6:08 p.m., soon after the victims were taken to hospital. Interestingly, he also noted that no formal complaint has been registered by either the family or the showroom management.
Conclusion
What was meant to be a joyful start for a new car turned into an unexpected ordeal for the family. Fortunately, no lives were lost, and injuries were minor. The incident has since sparked conversations online about safety, rituals, and the importance of caution during vehicle deliveries.
